Make a tool inventory with a purpose

List the tools you already own and the tasks you use them for. Record the make and model where relevant, and keep instructions with the inventory. Do not assume similar-looking tools have identical uses.

Inspect tools according to their manufacturer’s guidance and set aside damaged items for appropriate attention. Keep sharp tools protected and stored where they cannot be reached accidentally.

Before buying something new, write down the task it needs to perform. Ask a knowledgeable supplier or experienced person about suitability. A clear question is more useful than collecting tools without a project in mind.
